Following on from the previous lesson this exercise introduces more notes to the pattern. This lesson is a filmed extract from part of the Contemporary Guitar Performance Workshop. This is an approach to the guitar which is independant of stylistic considerations, (or style specific techniques) or instrumental characteristics (electric, acoustic, or classical guitar). The approach is based on musical vocabulary, chords, scales, and techinques. It uses no repertoire, instead relying on the students musical taste and creativity to apply the exercises and ideas to their own musical taste, and develop their own ‘voice’ on the guitar.

Music helped me stay away from the bad choices some of my friends were making, if you know what I mean”. When just a teen he began playing with Warrant, working with Paul Shaffer, Nickelodeon, Letterman and stealing the show at blues festivals all over Southern California. Ben is being introduced to millions in is roll as one of the faces of Guitar Center’s Laguna Guitar line. With just about 30 minutes left, we get Andrew Garcia covering “Genie in a Bottle” by Christina Aguilera. Oh man. Looks like SOMEBODY is a little too obsessed with re-creating his Paula Abdul moment. The performance is OK, but it really just looks like almost any quirky acoustic cover rendition you’d find on YouTube. Aside from adding the acoustic guitar, he really doesn’t change the melody at all. Overall, just average. Randy: “It didn’t quite work for me, dude.” Ellen: “I thought it was a great song choice…I thought the genie came out of the bottle too late.” Kara: “I’m disappointed because I like you.” Simon: “It was a little bit desperate, I thought.”
I first did this song as a ukulele solo. It was a challenge to do rap for me but it was a lot of fun. This is song 10 of 12 in our February 2010 set. The audiences really responded well to this song. Some even taped the whole song on their phones. I should have asked one of them to send me a copy. But, in the heat of performance, I just went on to the next song. Cypress Street Band: Ronin Wong – rap, vocals, ukulele Michael Millar, vocals, electric guitar Marianne Wong – vocals, acoustic guitar Jennifer Rashleigh – camera, sound, editing There’s also a live performance version of this song. www.youtube.com
